Week 2

Class was interesting this week. We talked alot about family systems and the boundary types that each relationship has. I found it interesting as we watched a mock family counseling session, we were able to see the boundaries in action. We also saw how we can fix bad relationship boundaries without directly telling people that they are doing it wrong. :) One assignment we had was to map out our own family's relationships and show what kind of boundaries each person has. It brought to light how imperfect my family is. By no means did I think we were perfect to begin with but I never realized exactly how rigid some of the boundaries are in my own family. Or how diffuse some are. Something interesting was brought up in class at the end of the mock session. Someone had said that it is human nature to feel for other people and want to help them. Some people just don't know how to do it where it would be beneficial to others. Counseling can bring out that human nature and help people develop it to where they feel comfortable showing affection and helping others. I always thought of the stereotype counseling session where the counselor is kind of wierd and no progress is ever made. But after seeing and understanding what they really do, I know it can truly help people. Sometimes it is just breaking past the subconscious mind that doesn't know there is a problem or doesn't want to change. Once you accomplish that, people can change and develop better relationships.
